Duchy of Savoy

A western European state ruled by the House of Savoy from 1416 until 1720, when its ruler acquired the Kingdom of Sardinia and the state was transformed into that kingdom.

Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy: The first Duke of Savoy, elevated to that rank in 1416, who later became antipope Felix V. His 1416 elevation established the duchy’s formal status.
