Duchy of Silesia

The Duchy of Silesia was a medieval Piast polity formed in 1138 from the lands assigned to Władysław II the Exile. It later divided into numerous Silesian duchies.

Bolesław III Wrymouth: Duke of Poland from 1107 until his death in 1138, whose testament divided the realm among his sons. His partition assigned Silesia to Władysław II and established the duchy's political setting.
Feudal partition: The division of a ruler's lands among heirs, often producing multiple semi-independent territories. Inheritance repeatedly split Silesian lands among Piast heirs.

Duchy of Opole: A medieval Silesian duchy ruled by the Opole branch of the Piast dynasty. It emerged as one of the principal territories formed from the wider Silesian inheritance.
