Duetting

Duetting is coordinated vocal behavior in which two animals alternate or combine sounds. It occurs in many animal groups and can serve roles such as territory defense, mate coordination, and social bonding.

Antiphonal calling: Vocal exchange in which one caller responds after another caller's signal. Many duets use alternating calls, with each partner timing its contribution to the other's.
Territoriality: The defense or regulation of an area by an animal or group. Paired calls can advertise joint occupancy and deter rivals from entering a territory.
Plain-tailed wren: A small Andean songbird known for highly coordinated duets between males and females. Its partners interlock notes so closely that their separate songs can sound like one voice.
Birdsong: Vocal communication produced by birds, often involving learned or innate song patterns. Birdsong includes solo displays as well as the coordinated exchanges classified as duets.
Vocal turn-taking: The organized alternation of vocal contributions among interacting individuals. Turn-taking lets duet partners coordinate without masking one another's sounds.
Mate guarding: Behavior that limits a mate's access to potential reproductive competitors. Some duet systems are associated with coordination that helps partners stay together.
Indri: A large lemur from Madagascar that produces loud, coordinated group songs. Indri songs include coordinated vocal contributions by paired and group members.
Solo singing: A vocal display produced by one individual without coordinated contributions from a partner. A solo lacks the partner coordination that defines duetting.
Call-and-response: A vocal pattern in which one signal is followed by a related response. Duets often build recognizable exchanges from calls and matching responses.
Pair bonding: A sustained social association between two individuals, often involving coordinated behavior. Repeated duet exchanges can reinforce coordination within a pair.
