Dutch Brazil

Dutch Brazil was a Dutch colonial territory in northeastern Brazil from 1630 to 1654, centered on Recife. It was governed by the Dutch West India Company and contested by Portugal.

Dutch West India Company: A Dutch chartered company founded in 1621 to conduct trade and colonial ventures in the Atlantic. It conquered and governed Dutch Brazil, financing its administration and sugar economy.
Dutch Revolt: The revolt of the Low Countries against Spanish rule, beginning in 1568 and leading to Dutch independence. The conflict shaped Dutch hostility toward Habsburg Spain and its Portuguese possessions.
Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen: A Dutch count and colonial governor who administered Dutch Brazil from 1637 to 1644. His governorship brought urban projects, scientific expeditions, and a period of relative stability.

First Battle of Guararapes: A 1648 battle in Pernambuco in which Portuguese-Brazilian forces defeated the Dutch. The victory weakened Dutch control and became a landmark in the reconquest.
Battle of Tabocas: A 1645 battle in Pernambuco in which insurgents defeated Dutch forces during the uprising. It marked an early turning point in the revolt against Dutch rule.
