Dutch East Indies

The Dutch colonial territory that covered most of the Indonesian archipelago until the Netherlands transferred sovereignty to Indonesia in 1949.

Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that controlled Asian trade and governed overseas territories from 1602 to 1799. Its trading empire established Dutch power in the archipelago before colonial rule passed to the state.
Dutch Ethical Policy: A Dutch colonial policy introduced around 1901 that promised improvements in education, irrigation, and migration. It recast colonial rule as a duty of welfare while leaving Dutch authority intact.
Herman Willem Daendels: A Dutch colonial governor-general who ruled Java from 1808 to 1811 and reorganized its administration and defenses. His reforms centralized authority during the Napoleonic era.
Indonesian National Awakening: The growth of modern Indonesian political and cultural nationalism in the early twentieth century. It transformed colonial subjects into participants in a movement for national self-rule.
Portuguese Timor: A Portuguese colony occupying the eastern part of Timor until its integration into Indonesia in 1976. It bordered the Dutch sphere but remained under a different European colonial power.

Sumpah Pemuda: A 1928 pledge by Indonesian nationalist groups affirming one homeland, one nation, and one language. It articulated a shared Indonesian identity across the colony's many islands and languages.
British Malaya: A group of British-governed territories on the Malay Peninsula and nearby islands before Malaysian independence. Its British administration and path to independence differed from Dutch rule in the archipelago.
