Dutch Republic

The Dutch Republic was a federal republic of seven northern Netherlands provinces, formally established in 1588 and lasting until the Batavian Revolution of 1795. Its seventeenth-century commercial and cultural prosperity made it a refuge for Descartes and other thinkers.

Dutch Revolt: A revolt in the Low Countries against Habsburg rule that began in 1568 and led to the Dutch Republic. The uprising produced the break from Spain that made an independent republic possible.
States General of the Netherlands: The federal assembly in which the provinces of the Dutch Republic negotiated common policy. It coordinated diplomacy, war, and other shared matters without abolishing provincial authority.
Dutch East India Company: A chartered Dutch trading company founded in 1602 with a monopoly on Dutch commerce east of the Cape of Good Hope. Its global trade helped finance the republic's wealth and international reach.

Dutch colonial empire: The overseas territories and trading networks controlled by the Dutch Republic and its chartered companies. The republic's global influence rested on both commerce and colonial domination.
