Dynamics of networks

Dynamics of networks studies how nodes, connections, and network properties change over time, including how structural change interacts with processes unfolding on a network.

Temporal network: A network whose nodes or edges vary over time, with temporal ordering treated as part of its structure. Temporal networks represent changing connections while preserving when each connection exists.
Graph theory: The mathematical study of graphs, consisting of vertices and the edges connecting them. Its graph representation supplies the basic language for describing network structure.
Epidemic modeling: The mathematical study of how infectious diseases spread through populations. Changing contact patterns alter opportunities for transmission and epidemic control.
Static network: A network represented with one fixed set of nodes and connections, without explicit temporal change. It omits the structural evolution that defines network dynamics.
Preferential attachment: A growth mechanism in which new nodes connect disproportionately to nodes that already have many connections. It explains how some evolving networks develop highly connected hubs.
Complex network: A graph whose large-scale structure has nontrivial patterns not captured by simple regular or random models. Many evolving systems are studied as complex networks with heterogeneous structure.
Social network: A network representing social relationships or interactions among people or groups. Social ties form, weaken, and dissolve as people interact.
Multilayer network: A network model with distinct layers of nodes or edges representing different relation types or contexts. Layers encode multiple kinds of connectivity, whereas temporal models encode change through time.
Edge rewiring: A process that changes which node pairs are connected while preserving some chosen network properties. Rewiring changes network structure without necessarily changing its size.
Network topology: The arrangement of connections among the nodes of a network. Topology is the structural quantity that network change reshapes.
