Knowra Dzungaria Dzungaria Dzungaria is the historical region of northwestern Xinjiang between the Altai Mountains and the Tian Shan. Its steppe corridors linked Central Asia with Mongolia and western China.
Dzungar Khanate : A Mongol state that ruled Dzungaria and neighboring regions from the seventeenth century until its destruction by Qing forces. The khanate made Dzungaria the center of Oirat power before Qing conquest.
Junggar Basin : A large sedimentary basin in northern Xinjiang, enclosed by mountain ranges and containing deserts, grasslands, and oil fields. The basin forms the geographic heart of historical Dzungaria.
Silk Road : A network of trade routes that connected East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Northern routes near Dzungaria linked China with Central Asian markets.
Dzungar genocide : The mass killing and displacement of Dzungar people during Qing campaigns in the 1750s, followed by severe population decline. The destruction of the Dzungars changed who lived in Dzungaria and who controlled it.
Oirats : A western Mongol confederation whose branches included the Dzungars, Khoshuts, Torguts, and Dörbets. The Dzungars were one Oirat branch, and their rule gave the region its historical name.
Altai Mountains : A mountain system spanning parts of China, Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan, marking Dzungaria’s northern boundary. The Altai separate Dzungaria from Mongolia and the Siberian interior.
Northern Silk Road : A set of overland routes across Central Asia that connected the Tarim Basin and China with regions farther west. Routes around Dzungaria offered alternatives to passage through southern Xinjiang.
Qing dynasty : China’s last imperial dynasty, which ruled from 1644 to 1912 and expanded into Inner Asia. Qing conquest brought Dzungaria into the empire’s expanding northwestern frontier.
Galdan Boshugtu Khan : A Dzungar ruler who built a powerful state in the late seventeenth century and fought the Qing Empire. His campaigns made control of Dzungaria central to Qing-Oirat rivalry.
Tian Shan : A major mountain system of Central Asia that forms Dzungaria’s southern boundary. The Tian Shan divides Dzungaria from the Tarim Basin and its oases.
