E. P. Thompson

Edward Palmer Thompson (1924–1993) was a British historian and socialist whose history of working-class formation reshaped social history and Marxist debate.

The Making of the English Working Class: Thompson’s 1963 history traces the formation of England’s working class from the late eighteenth century to the 1830s. This book’s account of class formation became his defining contribution.
Class formation: Class formation is the historical process through which social groups develop shared identities and interests. Thompson treated class as a relationship formed through struggle, not a fixed economic category.
Leszek Kołakowski: Leszek Kołakowski was a Polish philosopher and historian of ideas who became a prominent critic of Marxism. Thompson’s 1973 polemic against Kołakowski defended a humanist Marxist tradition.

Christopher Hill: Christopher Hill was a British Marxist historian known for studies of seventeenth-century England. Hill shared Thompson’s effort to recover popular political action in English history.
Economic determinism: Economic determinism treats economic forces as the primary or sufficient cause of social and historical change. He rejected explanations that derive politics and culture mechanically from economic conditions.
Social movement theory: Social movement theory explains how collective action forms, mobilizes, and influences political and social change. His account of popular traditions informs later interpretations of collective protest.
