Eadwig

Eadwig was king of England from 955 to 959. His short reign was marked by conflict with Archbishop Dunstan and his younger brother Edgar, who became king after him.

Edgar the Peaceful: Edgar was king of England from 959 to 975, succeeding his brother Eadwig. His rise as king followed the division of Eadwig’s kingdom and the end of Eadwig’s rule.

Eadred: Eadred was king of the English from 946 to 955 and Eadwig’s uncle. Eadred’s death in 955 brought Eadwig to the throne.
English monastic reform: English monastic reform was a tenth-century movement to restore Benedictine religious life in England. The churchmen opposed by Eadwig later advanced reform under Edgar’s patronage.
Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury: Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury was an English noblewoman associated with Eadwig and later venerated as a saint. Her marriage to Eadwig became entangled in the church opposition surrounding his court.
Kingdom of Mercia: The Kingdom of Mercia was a powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom in central England, later incorporated into England. Mercian allegiance shifted to Edgar during the division of Eadwig’s kingdom.
