Earthenware

Earthenware is pottery made from clay and fired at relatively low temperatures, leaving it porous unless glazed. It is generally less dense and more easily chipped than stoneware or porcelain.

Clay: Fine-grained natural material that becomes plastic when wet and hardens when dried or fired. Clay is the raw material shaped into earthenware vessels and objects.
Stoneware: Dense, usually vitrified pottery fired at higher temperatures than earthenware. Stoneware is generally less porous and more durable without a glaze.
Flowerpot: A container, commonly made of terracotta, used for growing plants. Unglazed earthenware flowerpots let air and moisture pass through their walls.
Pottery: Objects made by shaping clay and hardening it through firing. Earthenware is one of pottery’s broadest and oldest material classes.
Ceramic firing: The controlled heating of shaped clay or other ceramic materials to create durable objects. Firing hardens earthenware while leaving its body relatively porous.
Porcelain: A fine, dense ceramic made from selected materials and fired at high temperatures. Porcelain’s translucency and strength contrast with earthenware’s coarse, porous body.
Majolica: A tin-glazed earthenware tradition decorated with colorful designs beneath a clear glaze. Its opaque white glaze provides a ground for vivid painted decoration.
Neolithic pottery: Ceramic vessels produced by farming communities during the Neolithic period. Early earthenware vessels document the spread of pottery-making in settled societies.
Glaze: A vitreous coating fused to a ceramic surface during firing. A glaze seals earthenware’s pores and can add color or decoration.
Terracotta: A reddish, often unglazed earthenware ceramic made from iron-rich clay. Terracotta is a familiar earthenware type used for pots, tiles, and sculpture.
