East Asian–Australasian Flyway

The East Asian–Australasian Flyway is a migratory route linking breeding and nonbreeding grounds across eastern Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. It supports millions of migratory waterbirds moving between northern breeding areas and southern wetlands.

Shorebird migration: The seasonal movement of shorebirds between breeding and nonbreeding areas, often across long distances. Many flyway migrants follow this pattern between Arctic breeding grounds and southern coastal wetlands.
East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership: An international partnership that promotes conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats along the flyway. It coordinates governments, organizations, and site managers across the route.
Yellow Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. Its intertidal wetlands are a major staging area for shorebirds migrating along the flyway.
Coastal reclamation: The creation of new land from coastal waters or wetlands, often through drainage or filling. Reclamation around the Yellow Sea has reduced intertidal habitat used by migrating shorebirds.
Migratory stopover: A site where migratory animals pause to rest or refuel during a journey. Stopovers let birds replenish energy before crossing seas or continuing along the flyway.
Ramsar Convention: An international treaty for the conservation and wise use of wetlands. Ramsar site designation helps protect wetlands used by flyway migrants.
Spoon-billed sandpiper: A critically endangered shorebird with a distinctive spoon-shaped bill that breeds in northeastern Russia and winters in Southeast Asia. Its long-distance journey depends on a small number of threatened coastal stopovers.
Habitat fragmentation: The division of continuous habitat into smaller, separated patches. Loss of connected stopovers can leave migrants with fewer safe places to feed and rest.
Flyway: A broad geographic route used by migratory birds between seasonal ranges. The East Asian–Australasian route is one of the major flyways recognized worldwide.
Shorebird monitoring: The systematic recording of shorebird numbers, distribution, and population trends. Coordinated counts help identify declines and assess conservation action along the route.
