East European Plain

The East European Plain is a vast lowland region stretching from northern Europe to the Black and Caspian seas and east toward the Ural Mountains. It is among the largest continuous plains on Earth.

Ural Mountains: A mountain range traditionally marking part of the boundary between Europe and Asia. They form the plain’s eastern limit in conventional geographic descriptions.
Last Glacial Period: The most recent interval of repeated glacial advances, ending about 11,700 years ago. Ice sheets and meltwater reshaped the plain’s northern and central surfaces.
Eastern European agriculture: The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock across eastern Europe’s varied climates and soils. Fertile chernozem and loess make parts of the plain major farming regions.
North European Plain: A lowland belt extending across northern Europe from the Atlantic coast toward western Russia. It is the western continuation of Europe’s broad lowland corridor, but is usually treated as a distinct region.
Baltic Sea: An inland sea in northern Europe connected to the North Sea through narrow Danish straits. The plain reaches the Baltic coast across its northwestern extent.
Glacial landform: A natural landform created or modified by glaciers and their meltwater. Moraines, depressions, and other glacial features account for much of the plain’s northern relief.
Trans-Siberian Railway: A railway network connecting European Russia with the Russian Far East across Siberia. Its western approaches cross the plain’s open Russian lowlands.
Central Russian Upland: A region of elevated terrain in western Russia between the upper Dnieper and Don river basins. Its modest elevations interrupt the otherwise low relief of the plain’s interior.
Black Sea: An inland sea between southeastern Europe and western Asia, linked to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus and Dardanelles. Its northern shores bound the plain’s southern reaches.
Loess: A wind-deposited sediment, commonly rich in silt and capable of forming fertile soils. Loess blankets parts of the plain, supporting productive agriculture.
