East Flanders

East Flanders is a province in northwestern Belgium, in the Flemish Region. Its capital and largest city is Ghent.

Belgium: Belgium is a federal country in western Europe, divided into three regions and three language communities. East Flanders is one of Belgium’s ten provinces.
West Flanders: West Flanders is a province in Belgium’s Flemish Region, bordering the North Sea and East Flanders. It lies immediately west of East Flanders.
Aalst: Aalst is a city in East Flanders, Belgium, known for its annual carnival. It is one of the province’s largest cities outside Ghent.
County of Flanders: The County of Flanders was a medieval and early modern polity in the Low Countries, centered on cities including Ghent and Bruges. East Flanders occupies part of the historic county’s territory.
Port of Ghent: The Port of Ghent is an inland seaport connected to the North Sea through the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. It links East Flanders’s industrial economy to international shipping.
Flemish Region: The Flemish Region is the Dutch-speaking northern region of Belgium, with its own parliament and government. East Flanders is one of its five provinces.
Antwerp Province: Antwerp is a province in Belgium’s Flemish Region, centered on the city of Antwerp. It borders East Flanders to the northeast.
Sint-Niklaas: Sint-Niklaas is a city in East Flanders, Belgium, and the capital of the Waasland region. It anchors the province’s Waasland area.
French Department of the Scheldt: The Department of the Scheldt was a French administrative division established in 1795 in territory now largely within East Flanders. Its boundaries helped shape the later Belgian province.
Ghent–Terneuzen Canal: The Ghent–Terneuzen Canal connects Ghent in Belgium with the Western Scheldt estuary in the Netherlands. It gives the province’s port direct access to the sea.
