East Turkestan independence movement

A political movement advocating independence or self-determination for East Turkestan, the name its supporters use for China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

First East Turkestan Republic: A short-lived republic proclaimed in Kashgar in 1933 and suppressed in 1934. It was the first major state project associated with modern East Turkestan independence.
World Uyghur Congress: An international organization advocating Uyghur rights and self-determination through nonviolent political activity. It represents a prominent diaspora-led approach, though it does not uniformly demand independence.
Uyghur autonomy: A political position seeking meaningful self-government for Uyghurs without necessarily establishing a separate sovereign state. It differs from independence by accepting continued inclusion within a larger state.
Xinjiang internment camps: Detention facilities where large numbers of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities were held in Xinjiang, especially from 2017. Their global exposure intensified debate over the conditions that independence advocates cite.
Second East Turkestan Republic: A Soviet-backed republic that governed parts of northern Xinjiang from 1944 to 1949. Its brief existence remains a central precedent in independence movement histories.
Rebiya Kadeer: A Uyghur businesswoman and activist who led the World Uyghur Congress from 2006 to 2017. Her public advocacy brought international attention to Uyghur political claims.
Uyghur human rights movement: Advocacy addressing abuses and civil, cultural, and religious rights affecting Uyghurs. Many rights advocates avoid taking a position on whether Xinjiang should become independent.
Uyghur diaspora: Uyghur communities living outside their ancestral homeland, formed through migration and successive waves of exile. Diaspora networks provide much of the movement’s organizing and international public voice.
Xinjiang conflict: A broad term for political and armed conflicts over governance, identity, and state authority in Xinjiang. The movement emerged within a longer struggle over the region’s political status.
Isa Yusuf Alptekin: A Uyghur politician and exile who advocated an independent East Turkestan after leaving China in 1949. His activism helped sustain independence advocacy among Uyghur exiles.
