Eastern Anatolia Region

Eastern Anatolia Region is one of Turkey’s seven traditional geographical regions, occupying the country’s eastern highlands and mountainous interior.

Anatolia: Anatolia is the large peninsula forming most of the Asian part of Turkey. Eastern Anatolia is the eastern highland portion of this broader landmass.
Continental climate: A continental climate has large seasonal temperature contrasts and limited maritime influence. Distance from the sea and high elevation produce severe winters and short growing seasons.
Mount Nemrut: Mount Nemrut is a summit in southeastern Turkey known for monumental statues built for King Antiochus I of Commagene. The UNESCO-listed sanctuary represents the region’s ancient cultural landscapes.
Eastern Express: The Eastern Express is a long-distance passenger train service linking Ankara and Kars. Its route connects remote eastern cities and has become a prominent rail journey.
Eastern Anatolia Region provinces: The provinces assigned to Turkey’s Eastern Anatolia Region form a conventional administrative-geographic grouping. Their boundaries show how the traditional region is subdivided.
Elevation: Elevation is the vertical height of a place above a reference level, usually mean sea level. High altitude lowers temperatures and constrains agriculture across much of the region.
Ani: Ani is a medieval Armenian city in eastern Turkey, near the present-day border with Armenia. Its churches and fortifications preserve a major urban center of the region’s past.
Keban Dam: Keban Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates River in Elazığ Province, Turkey. Its reservoir and power generation transformed part of the region’s river valley.
Armenian Highlands: The Armenian Highlands are a mountainous plateau spanning eastern Turkey and neighboring parts of the Caucasus and western Asia. Much of the region’s terrain belongs to this highland system.
Snowmelt: Snowmelt is the runoff produced when accumulated snow turns to liquid water. Seasonal melting feeds the region’s rivers and reservoirs.
