Eastern Arabia

Eastern Arabia is the Persian Gulf-facing region of the Arabian Peninsula, including eastern Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Its history and settlement have been shaped by maritime trade, oasis agriculture, and oil.

Dilmun: An ancient Gulf civilization centered on Bahrain, prominent in trade between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. Bahrain preserves the best-known archaeological center of this early Gulf civilization.
Pearl fishing: The harvesting of natural pearls from oysters, historically practiced by divers in warm, shallow seas. Pearling sustained coastal livelihoods across the Gulf before cultured pearls and oil reshaped the economy.
Bedouin: Arab pastoral communities historically organized around kinship, mobility, and the raising of livestock. Bedouin movement connected the Gulf coast with the region’s inland deserts and oases.

Najd: The central plateau of the Arabian Peninsula, historically distinct from its Gulf-facing eastern coast. Its inland geography and political history contrast with eastern Arabia’s coastal orientation.
Tylos: The name used by classical Greek writers for Bahrain and nearby Gulf islands. It shows how Greek accounts identified Bahrain within the region’s ancient geography.
Dhow: A traditional sailing vessel used across the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, typically with a lateen sail. Dhow routes carried people and goods among Gulf ports and the wider Indian Ocean.
Baharna: An Arabic-speaking community historically associated with the settled villages and oases of Bahrain and eastern Arabia. Their histories illuminate the region’s long-established agricultural and coastal populations.
Port of Jebel Ali: A major deep-water port in Dubai and one of the world’s largest container ports. It demonstrates how Gulf ports connect eastern Arabia to global shipping networks.
Al-Hasa: A historic oasis region in eastern Saudi Arabia, centered on the Al-Ahsa oasis. It is a major inland subregion within eastern Arabia, not a synonym for the whole region.
