Eastern Bloc

The Soviet Union and its allied socialist states in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, linked by political, military, and economic institutions.

Warsaw Pact: A military alliance formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and socialist states in Central and Eastern Europe. It formalized the bloc’s military alignment under Soviet leadership.
German Democratic Republic: A socialist state in eastern Germany from 1949 until German reunification in 1990. It was the bloc’s frontline state beside West Germany and NATO.
Iron Curtain: A political and ideological division separating Soviet-aligned Europe from Western Europe during the Cold War. The phrase captured the division from which the bloc took shape.
Hungarian Revolution of 1956: A nationwide uprising against Hungary’s communist government and Soviet domination, suppressed by Soviet forces in 1956. Its suppression demonstrated that Moscow would use force to preserve the bloc.
Comecon: An economic organization established in 1949 to coordinate cooperation among socialist states led by the Soviet Union. It organized economic ties among the bloc’s member states.
