Eastern Ganga dynasty

The Eastern Ganga dynasty ruled Kalinga, chiefly present-day Odisha, from the early medieval period into the fifteenth century. Its rulers sponsored major temples, including the Konark Sun Temple.

Kalinga: An ancient and medieval region on India’s east coast, centered largely in present-day Odisha. The dynasty’s power base was the historic region of Kalinga.
Narasimhadeva I: An Eastern Ganga king of the thirteenth century, remembered for military campaigns and temple patronage. He is closely associated with the construction of the Konark Sun Temple.
Jagannath: A Hindu deity worshipped especially at Puri, where Jagannath is the central figure of a major temple tradition. Eastern Ganga rulers made Jagannath worship central to royal legitimacy.
Konark Sun Temple: A thirteenth-century temple in Odisha dedicated to Surya, designed as a monumental stone chariot. Its construction under Narasimhadeva I is the dynasty’s most famous architectural legacy.
Odisha: An eastern Indian state whose historical regions include Kalinga and whose capital is Bhubaneswar. The dynasty’s core territory corresponds chiefly to present-day Odisha.
Anantavarman Chodaganga: An Eastern Ganga ruler who established a powerful kingdom in Kalinga during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. His reign marks the dynasty’s major expansion and political consolidation.
Anangabhima III: An Eastern Ganga ruler who strengthened the kingdom’s administration and religious institutions in the thirteenth century. His reign helped consolidate the state before Narasimhadeva I.
Puri: A coastal city in Odisha, renowned as the site of the Jagannath Temple. The city became a major center of the dynasty’s religious and political patronage.
Jagannath Temple, Puri: A major Hindu temple in Puri dedicated to Jagannath and associated with a long history of royal patronage. Ganga rulers expanded the temple’s importance as a royal and religious center.
Gajapati Kingdom: A fifteenth- and sixteenth-century kingdom based in Odisha, founded after the decline of Eastern Ganga rule. It inherited the regional power center established by the Eastern Gangas.
