Eastern Ghats

The Eastern Ghats are a discontinuous range of low mountains along India’s eastern coast, extending through Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Deccan Plateau: A large plateau covering much of peninsular India, bounded by mountain ranges along its western and eastern margins. The Eastern Ghats border the plateau’s eastern side and are interrupted by rivers flowing across it.
Mahanadi River: A major river of east-central India that flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha to the Bay of Bengal. Its course cuts through the northern Eastern Ghats before reaching the coast.
Arma Konda: A mountain peak in Andhra Pradesh, commonly identified as the highest point of the Eastern Ghats. It provides a named example of the range’s highest terrain.
Western Ghats: A largely continuous mountain chain running parallel to India’s western coast. Unlike the Eastern Ghats, the Western Ghats form a more continuous and higher barrier.
Bay of Bengal: The northeastern part of the Indian Ocean, bordered by India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The Eastern Ghats run inland from India’s coast along the bay’s western margin.
Godavari River: A major river of peninsular India that flows east across the Deccan Plateau to the Bay of Bengal. Its broad valley interrupts the Eastern Ghats and divides mountain sections.
Nallamala Hills: A rugged hill range in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana forming part of the Eastern Ghats. The Nallamalas illustrate the range’s forested central sections.
Nilgiri Mountains: A mountain massif at the junction of the Western and Eastern Ghats in southern India. The Nilgiris mark a highland junction, unlike the separated eastern ranges.
Eastern Coastal Plains: A broad lowland belt between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal in eastern India. These plains separate much of the mountain range from the sea.
Krishna River: A major peninsular Indian river that flows east from the Western Ghats to the Bay of Bengal. Its valley crosses the range and contributes to its discontinuous form.
