Eastern Han

The Eastern Han was the second period of the Han dynasty in China, lasting from 25 to 220 CE after the Xin dynasty. Its capital was Luoyang.

Emperor Guangwu of Han: The founder of the Eastern Han, who reunified much of China and ruled from 25 to 57 CE. His restoration of Han rule began this period after the Xin dynasty.
Xin dynasty: A Chinese dynasty founded by Wang Mang that ruled from 9 to 23 CE between the Western and Eastern Han. Its overthrow created the opening for the Han restoration in 25 CE.
Ban Chao: A Han general and diplomat who expanded Chinese influence across the Western Regions in the first century CE. His campaigns extended Eastern Han power along the Silk Road.
Luoyang: A historic city in central China that served as the capital of the Eastern Han dynasty. Its location east of Chang’an gave this Han period its conventional name.
Book of the Later Han: A fifth-century Chinese history of the Eastern Han dynasty, compiled by Fan Ye. It is the principal traditional narrative source for the period’s people and events.
Han–Xiongnu War: A long series of conflicts between Han China and the Xiongnu confederation over power and territory in Inner Asia. Renewed warfare with the Xiongnu strained Eastern Han resources and frontier security.
Wang Mang: A Han court official who seized the throne and founded the Xin dynasty in 9 CE. His rule interrupted the Han dynasty before Eastern Han’s founding.
Ban Gu: A historian and poet who helped compile the Book of Han, a history of the Western Han dynasty. His family’s historical work supplied a model for recording the Eastern Han era.
Han dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 202 BCE to 220 CE, interrupted by the Xin dynasty. Eastern Han was the dynasty’s second major period.
Yellow River: A major river in northern China whose floods and shifting course affected settlement and agriculture. Flooding and relief demands contributed to social strain during late Eastern Han.
