Eastern Rumelia

Eastern Rumelia was an autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire, established south of Bulgaria by the 1878 Treaty of Berlin. It united with the Principality of Bulgaria in 1885.

Treaty of Berlin (1878): The 1878 treaty that revised the settlement of the Russo-Turkish War and reorganized Ottoman territories in southeastern Europe. It established Eastern Rumelia as an autonomous Ottoman province.
Organic Statute of Eastern Rumelia: The 1879 constitutional statute that organized Eastern Rumelia’s administration, legislature, and provincial offices. It translated the treaty’s autonomy into a working provincial government.
Aleko Bogoridi: A Bulgarian-Ottoman statesman who served as Eastern Rumelia’s first governor-general from 1879 to 1884. His tenure established the province’s early governing practice.

Macedonia under Ottoman rule: A broad Ottoman region in the Balkans that remained under direct imperial administration during the late nineteenth century. It lacked Eastern Rumelia’s treaty-guaranteed autonomous provincial institutions.
