Eastern United States

The Eastern United States is the broad region east of the Mississippi River, encompassing the country’s Atlantic coast, Great Lakes, and interior eastern states.

Mississippi River: A major North American river flowing from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It is the broad western boundary used in this definition of the East.
Atlantic Coast: The eastern shoreline of North America along the Atlantic Ocean. It forms the region’s long seaward edge and shaped its earliest colonial settlements.
Thirteen Colonies: The British colonies on the Atlantic coast that declared independence in 1776. They occupied the region’s coast and became the first states.
Northeast Corridor: A densely populated urban region extending from Boston to Washington, D.C. It concentrates major cities, institutions, and transport links along the East Coast.
Western United States: The broad region of the United States west of the Mississippi River. It provides the most direct geographic counterpart to the East.
Eastern Time Zone: A time zone covering much of the eastern United States and parts of Canada and the Caribbean. Its coverage overlaps the region but does not define its geographic boundary.
Appalachian Mountains: A mountain system extending from eastern Canada through the eastern United States to Alabama. The range divides coastal lowlands from much of the region’s interior.
American Revolution: The political and military struggle through which the Thirteen Colonies won independence from Britain. Its central campaigns and institutions arose largely in the eastern colonies.
Interstate 95: A major north–south highway running along the eastern United States. It connects many of the region’s largest coastal metropolitan areas.
Sun Belt: A southern and southwestern United States region known for warm climates and postwar population growth. Its cultural and economic boundaries cut across the East–West geographic division.
