Eastern Wu

Eastern Wu was a state ruled by the Sun family in southeastern China from 222 to 280. It became a formally proclaimed empire in 229 and was one of the Three Kingdoms.

Sun Quan: Sun Quan was the ruler who established Eastern Wu and proclaimed himself emperor in 229. His rule transformed the Sun family’s southeastern power base into an empire.
Yangtze River: The Yangtze is Asia’s longest river, flowing eastward across China to the East China Sea. Its waterways and crossings formed Wu’s central defensive barrier against northern armies.
Sun Jian: Sun Jian was a Han-era general and warlord, and the father of Sun Ce and Sun Quan. His military career began the family’s ascent before Eastern Wu existed.
Conquest of Wu by Jin: The conquest of Wu by Jin was the campaign that ended Eastern Wu in 280. Jin’s invasion brought the Three Kingdoms period to a close by absorbing Wu.
Battle of Red Cliffs: The Battle of Red Cliffs was a 208 naval conflict in which Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao’s forces. The victory checked Cao Cao’s southward advance and preserved the conditions for Wu’s rise.
Jianye: Jianye was the capital of Eastern Wu, located at the site of modern Nanjing. The court governed Wu from this strategically placed lower-Yangtze city.
Zhou Yu: Zhou Yu was a general and strategist who served Sun Quan and commanded Wu forces at Red Cliffs. His command helped secure the victory that protected Wu’s emerging power.
Jin dynasty (266–420): The Jin dynasty was a Chinese dynasty that reunified the country in 280 before later fragmenting. Its conquest of Wu briefly reunited territories divided among the Three Kingdoms.
Jing Province: Jing Province was a strategically important region in central China contested by rival powers during the Three Kingdoms period. Control of Jing shaped Wu’s western frontier and its rivalry with Shu Han.
Jiaozhou: Jiaozhou was a southern administrative region encompassing parts of present-day southern China and northern Vietnam. Wu’s control of Jiaozhou extended its authority along the southern coast and into mainland Southeast Asia.
