Knowra Eating disorder Eating disorder An eating disorder is a mental disorder involving persistent disturbances in eating behavior that impair health or psychological or social functioning. Common diagnoses include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.
Anorexia nervosa : An eating disorder involving restricted energy intake, intense fear of weight gain or persistent behavior preventing weight gain, and disturbed body image. Restriction and fear of weight gain define this distinct diagnosis.
Body image : A person's perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about their body's appearance and shape. Disturbed body image can reinforce restriction, checking, and distress.
Eating disorder screening : The use of brief questions or instruments to identify people who may need a fuller eating-disorder assessment. Screening can prompt evaluation, but does not establish a diagnosis.
Orthorexia nervosa : A proposed construct describing an excessive preoccupation with eating foods considered healthy; it is not a standalone DSM-5-TR diagnosis. Health-focused eating can be impairing without meeting formal eating-disorder diagnostic criteria.
Malnutrition : A state of inadequate, excessive, or imbalanced energy or nutrient intake that harms health. Restrictive eating can cause malnutrition and impair multiple organ systems.
Bulimia nervosa : An eating disorder marked by recurrent binge eating and compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, fasting, or excessive exercise. Binge episodes followed by compensation distinguish this diagnosis.
Food restriction : A reduction in food intake that limits energy or nutrients, whether intentional or caused by illness or circumstance. Restriction can intensify hunger, preoccupation with food, and physical risk.
Eating disorder diagnosis : The clinical process of identifying an eating disorder using symptoms, duration, impairment, and relevant medical assessment. Diagnosis distinguishes specific disorders and guides an individualized care plan.
Feeding disorder : A persistent disturbance in eating or feeding that impairs nutrition or functioning; diagnostic classifications include feeding and eating disorders. The broader classification includes conditions centered on feeding as well as eating behavior.
Osteoporosis : A skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone strength and increased risk of fracture. Low energy availability and hormonal changes can reduce bone density.
