Economics of education

Economics of education studies how resources, incentives, and institutions shape education, and how education affects individuals, labor markets, economic growth, and society.

Human capital: Knowledge, skills, and capabilities embodied in people that can raise their productivity and earnings. This framework treats education as an investment that builds productive capabilities.
Cost-benefit analysis: A method for comparing a policy’s or project’s expected benefits with its costs. It helps assess whether education programs justify the resources they consume.
Social mobility: Movement of individuals or groups between positions in a society’s economic or social hierarchy. Education can change the chances that people move beyond the circumstances of their families.
Human capital theory: The theory that investments in education and training build productive abilities and raise economic returns. It is the central investment-based explanation for education’s economic value.
Causal inference: Methods for identifying cause-and-effect relationships from data, experiments, or natural variation. Estimating education’s effects requires separating schooling from the traits and circumstances that influence it.
Signaling theory: The theory that observable credentials can convey otherwise hidden traits to employers or other decision-makers. It explains why education may raise wages by signaling ability, even without increasing productivity.
School finance: The study and practice of raising, allocating, and distributing funds for schools. Funding rules determine which resources schools can provide and how evenly they are distributed.
Income inequality: The unequal distribution of income among people or households in a population. Differences in educational access and returns can widen or narrow earnings gaps.
Education as a positional good: A good whose value depends partly on how its holder ranks relative to others. This view explains why credentials can matter for competition even when overall skills do not rise.
Compulsory education: Laws requiring children to attend school until a specified age or level. Changes in attendance laws can help estimate schooling’s effects, while raising questions about who benefits.
