Ecophysiology

Ecophysiology studies how organisms’ physiological processes interact with environmental conditions and shape survival, growth, and reproduction.

Homeostasis: The regulation of internal conditions within ranges compatible with biological function. Organisms maintain internal stability while external temperature, water, and resources fluctuate.
Physiology: The study of the functions and mechanisms of living organisms. Ecophysiology applies physiological explanations to organisms in environmental settings.
Thermal performance curve: A relationship showing how an organism’s performance changes across temperatures. It quantifies thermal limits and the conditions under which function peaks.
C4 carbon fixation: A photosynthetic pathway that concentrates carbon dioxide around the enzyme Rubisco. It illustrates a plant adaptation that can improve carbon gain in hot, bright environments.
Thermoregulation: The control of body temperature through physiological and behavioral processes. Temperature regulation links environmental heat to metabolic function and survival.
Ecology: The study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environments. Ecophysiology links organismal function to ecological conditions and outcomes.
Critical thermal maximum: The upper temperature at which an organism can no longer maintain coordinated function. This measure estimates vulnerability to acute heat exposure.
Antifreeze proteins: Proteins that inhibit ice-crystal growth in the body fluids of some organisms. They show how physiological molecules enable survival in freezing conditions.
Osmoregulation: The control of water and dissolved-solute concentrations in an organism. Water and salinity impose physiological demands that vary across habitats.
Environmental physiology: The study of how environmental factors affect physiological function. It overlaps closely with ecophysiology, emphasizing environmental effects on function.
