Ecosystem engineer

An organism that physically modifies its environment, changing the availability of resources or habitat for other species. Its effects can persist beyond its own activities.

Niche construction: The process by which organisms modify environmental conditions that affect themselves or other organisms. It describes the broader process behind an engineer’s physical effects on its surroundings.
European beaver: A large semiaquatic rodent native to Eurasia that builds dams and lodges. Its dams create ponds and wetlands by slowing or redirecting streams.
Habitat modification: A change to the physical structure or conditions of an organism’s habitat. This is the direct environmental change through which ecosystem engineers affect other species.
Keystone species: A species whose ecological effect is disproportionately large relative to its abundance. An engineer is defined by physical environmental change; a keystone species by its overall ecological impact.
Bioturbation: The disturbance and mixing of soil or sediment by living organisms. Burrowing and feeding can reshape sediment, oxygen flow, and habitat structure.
North American beaver: A large semiaquatic rodent native to North America that builds dams and lodges. Its dam-building is a prominent example of animal construction changing landscapes.
Biodiversity: The variety of living organisms across genes, species, and ecosystems. New or altered habitats can change which species occur and how many coexist.
Foundation species: A locally abundant species that creates or defines habitat and shapes community structure. Foundation species often engineer habitat, but the concepts emphasize different ecological roles.
Beaver dam: A structure built by beavers from branches, mud, and other materials to obstruct flowing water. A dam turns an animal’s construction into changes in water depth, flow, and wetland habitat.
Reef-building coral: A coral that deposits a calcium-carbonate skeleton contributing to reef structure. Its accumulated skeletons form complex habitat used by other marine species.
