Ecuadorian War of Independence

The military and political struggle that ended Spanish rule in the territory that became Ecuador, culminating in independence and its incorporation into Gran Colombia.

Quito Revolution of 1809: An uprising in Quito that established a short-lived autonomous governing junta against Spanish colonial authority. Its 1809 revolt began the independence struggle in the territory that became Ecuador.
Battle of Pichincha: The 1822 battle near Quito in which Antonio José de Sucre's forces defeated the Spanish royalist army. Its royalist defeat secured Quito and effectively ended Spanish rule in the region.
Manuela Sáenz: A South American independence activist who supported Patriot forces and later became Simón Bolívar's companion. Her political and military service linked Quito's struggle to Bolívar's campaigns.
