Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople

The senior autocephalous church of Eastern Orthodoxy, led by the Ecumenical Patriarch and based in Istanbul. It holds primacy of honor among Orthodox churches without governing them as a centralized authority.

Ecumenical Patriarch: The presiding bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, traditionally regarded as first among Orthodox bishops. The patriarch leads the church and represents its primacy of honor.
First Council of Constantinople: The ecumenical council held in Constantinople in 381, which affirmed the city's ecclesiastical precedence after Rome. Its third canon established an early basis for Constantinople's elevated rank.
Bartholomew I of Constantinople: The 270th Ecumenical Patriarch, elected in 1991 and known for environmental advocacy and inter-Orthodox diplomacy. He is the current head of the patriarchate and a prominent voice in contemporary Orthodoxy.

Moscow Patriarchate: The self-governing Russian Orthodox church headed by the Patriarch of Moscow. Moscow contests Constantinople's interpretation of primacy and jurisdiction in several disputes.
Tomos of autocephaly: A formal ecclesiastical decree granting a church the status of autocephaly. Constantinople issued the decree that recognized the Orthodox Church of Ukraine as autocephalous.
