Ecumenism

Ecumenism is the movement and practice of fostering unity, cooperation, and dialogue among Christian churches and traditions, especially those divided by history or doctrine.

Ecumenical dialogue: Structured conversations in which representatives of Christian traditions examine disagreements and seek mutual understanding or agreement. Formal dialogue lets churches address doctrinal divisions without requiring immediate institutional merger.
Edinburgh Missionary Conference: A 1910 gathering of Protestant mission societies that encouraged cooperation and helped shape the modern ecumenical movement. Its concern about divided Christian missions became a catalyst for organized unity efforts.
Nathan Söderblom: A Swedish Lutheran archbishop and theologian who promoted Christian unity and convened the 1925 Stockholm Conference. He advanced cooperation among churches around social and ethical concerns.
Denominationalism: The organization of Christianity into distinct denominations with separate identities and governance. Ecumenism seeks cooperation across the divisions that denominational structures preserve.
Bilateral dialogue: A discussion conducted between two parties, often governments, organizations, or religious traditions. Many church agreements develop through focused conversations between two traditions at a time.
