Edgar Lee Masters

Edgar Lee Masters (1868–1950) was an American poet, biographer, and lawyer, best known for Spoon River Anthology, a sequence of fictional epitaphs voiced by residents of an Illinois town.

Spoon River Anthology: A 1915 poetry collection of fictional epitaphs spoken by residents of a small Illinois town. Masters’s defining work gives individual voices to the community named in the collection.
William Marion Reedy: An American editor who published the St. Louis literary magazine Reedy’s Mirror. Reedy encouraged Masters’s writing and published early poems that led toward Spoon River Anthology.
Theodore Dreiser: An American novelist whose naturalistic fiction examined social forces and ordinary lives. Dreiser was among the contemporary writers who recognized the power of Masters’s Spoon River poems.
