Edict of Nantes

A 1598 decree by King Henry IV of France that granted French Protestants limited religious and civic rights and helped end the French Wars of Religion.

Henry IV of France: King of France from 1589 to 1610, whose conversion to Catholicism and policies helped end the French Wars of Religion. He issued the decree to secure a settlement after years of civil war.
St. Bartholomew's Day massacre: The 1572 mass killing of Huguenots in Paris and other French cities amid the French Wars of Religion. The massacre intensified confessional violence that the 1598 settlement sought to contain.
Peace of Alais: A 1629 agreement that ended Huguenot political and military resistance while preserving their religious rights under French royal authority. It curtailed the security arrangements granted by Nantes without immediately ending Protestant worship.
