Edmund Barton

Edmund Barton was an Australian statesman who led the movement for federation, became Australia’s first prime minister in 1901, and later served as a justice of the High Court of Australia.

Alfred Deakin: An Australian politician who served three times as prime minister and helped lead the federation movement. Deakin was Barton’s close political ally and succeeded him as prime minister.
Australian federation: The process by which the six Australian colonies united as the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Barton’s political prominence grew from his leadership of the movement that achieved federation.
