Edna O'Brien

Edna O’Brien (1930–2024) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, and playwright whose fiction often examined women’s lives, sexuality, and social constraint. Her debut novel, The Country Girls, was banned in Ireland.

The Country Girls: Edna O’Brien’s 1960 debut novel follows two young Irish women from rural life toward adulthood. This novel launched the trilogy and brought O’Brien into conflict with Irish censorship.
