Édouard-Alfred Martel

Édouard-Alfred Martel (1859–1938) was a French cave explorer and scientist who helped establish modern speleology through systematic exploration, surveying, and publication.

Speleology: The scientific study and exploration of caves and other subterranean environments. Martel’s organized surveys and publications helped establish this field as a distinct discipline.
Gouffre de Padirac: A large limestone sinkhole and cave system in the Lot region of France. Martel explored this shaft in 1889 and helped reveal its underground river and passages.
Cave mapping: The creation of plans and profiles representing a cave’s passages and elevations. Martel used measured plans to preserve the spatial results of explorations.
Émile Rivière: A French prehistorian and archaeologist who studied prehistoric cave sites. Rivière’s cave research formed part of the French scientific context surrounding Martel’s explorations.
Limestone: A sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate, often dissolved by groundwater. Much of Martel’s cave exploration took place in limestone terrain shaped by dissolution.
