Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville

Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was a French printer and inventor who created the phonautograph, an early device that traced sound vibrations onto a surface but could not play them back.

Phonautograph: An instrument that traced sound vibrations as marks on a surface, without playing them back. Scott’s invention used this device to turn sound into visible traces.
Smoked glass: Glass coated with soot to provide a dark surface on which fine marks can be traced. Some phonautograph recordings used this surface to preserve the stylus’s motion.
