Eduard Bernstein

Eduard Bernstein (1850–1932) was a German socialist theorist and politician who argued that socialism could advance through parliamentary democracy and gradual reform rather than revolution.

Karl Marx: Karl Marx was a German philosopher and political economist whose critique of capitalism shaped socialist movements. Bernstein treated Marx’s work as a foundation while disputing revolutionary predictions attributed to it.
Evolutionary socialism: Evolutionary socialism is the view that socialism can develop through gradual, democratic reform rather than revolutionary seizure of power. Bernstein gave this strategy its best-known theoretical defense.
Anti-Socialist Laws: The Anti-Socialist Laws were German measures enacted in 1878 that restricted socialist organizations, publications, and meetings. Their repression pushed Bernstein into exile and shaped his early work for the socialist movement.
Revisionism: Revisionism is the reconsideration of established socialist doctrine, especially the rejection of inevitable capitalist collapse and revolutionary necessity. Bernstein became the movement’s most influential early advocate, giving the label its defining political dispute.
Friedrich Engels: Friedrich Engels was a German socialist thinker and collaborator of Karl Marx. Bernstein worked with Engels in the Social Democratic movement and later challenged orthodox interpretations of Marxism.
Parliamentary democracy: Parliamentary democracy is a system in which elected representatives make laws and governments depend on legislative support. Bernstein saw electoral institutions as means for workers to win lasting social reforms.
Social Democratic Party of Germany: The Social Democratic Party of Germany is a political party founded in 1875 with roots in the German workers’ movement. Bernstein developed his arguments within the party whose electoral growth made reform seem increasingly viable.
Bad Godesberg Program: The Bad Godesberg Program was the 1959 program through which West Germany’s Social Democratic Party formally moved beyond Marxist doctrine. Its acceptance of a broad democratic reform politics echoed themes Bernstein had argued for decades earlier.
August Bebel: August Bebel was a German socialist politician and a leading founder of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Bebel led the party whose strategy Bernstein sought to reshape through gradual reform.
Trade union: A trade union is an organization through which workers collectively bargain and pursue shared workplace interests. Bernstein regarded unions as practical instruments for improving workers’ conditions and building political capacity.
