Education in India

Education in India is the system of institutions, policies, and practices providing learning from early childhood through higher education. It combines central and state governance with public, private, and community provision.

Ministry of Education (India): The Union government ministry responsible for national education policy and central education institutions. It coordinates central policy and national programs within a system shared with state governments.
Anganwadi: A community-based rural and urban childcare and nutrition center operating under India’s Integrated Child Development Services. Anganwadis provide early childhood care and preschool activities before formal schooling.
Wood's Despatch: A 1854 British colonial dispatch that proposed a structured system of education in India, including universities and teacher training. Its recommendations helped establish institutions and administrative patterns inherited by later systems.
National Council for Teacher Education: India’s statutory regulator for teacher education institutions and professional standards. Its regulatory role differs from NCERT’s work on school curriculum and educational resources.
State education departments in India: State-level government bodies that administer education policy, schools, and services within Indian states and union territories. States carry much of the responsibility for school administration and implementation.
Government schools in India: Schools owned or administered by Indian central, state, or local governments. They provide publicly funded schooling across a wide range of communities and income levels.
University Education Commission (India): A 1948–49 commission chaired by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan that examined university education in independent India. Its recommendations shaped early post-independence thinking about universities and national development.
Indian Institutes of Technology: A network of autonomous public engineering and technology institutions established by acts of India’s Parliament. Their selective admissions and research mission contrast with the broader aims of mass higher education.
Right to Education Act: India’s 2009 law establishing free and compulsory elementary education for children aged six to fourteen. It makes elementary schooling a legal entitlement and specifies duties for governments and schools.
Private schools in India: Schools in India managed by non-governmental organizations, trusts, or private entities. They form a large and varied part of school provision alongside government schools.
