Knowra Educational research Educational research Educational research is systematic inquiry into teaching, learning, educational institutions, and policies. It uses empirical and interpretive methods to describe educational settings, explain outcomes, and evaluate change.
Randomized controlled trial : An experiment that assigns participants randomly to intervention and comparison groups to estimate causal effects. Random assignment can test whether an educational intervention caused measured changes in learning.
Research question : A focused question that specifies what an investigation seeks to describe, explain, compare, or evaluate. It determines which educational evidence and methods are relevant.
Evidence-based education : The use of research evidence alongside professional judgment and contextual knowledge to guide educational decisions. It describes how findings can inform practice without treating research as a substitute for local judgment.
Qualitative research : Research that interprets nonnumeric data to understand meanings, experiences, processes, or social contexts. It can explain how participants experience schooling where numerical outcomes alone are insufficient.
Quasi-experiment : A study that estimates intervention effects without random assignment, using comparison groups or other causal designs. School policies and classroom programs often cannot be assigned randomly.
Sampling (statistics) : The selection of observations or participants from a population to support analysis and inference. A study's sample affects how far findings can extend beyond participating schools or students.
Program evaluation : The systematic assessment of a program's design, implementation, outcomes, or value. Evaluators use educational research methods to judge whether programs meet their aims.
Quantitative research : Research that represents observations numerically and uses mathematical or statistical analysis to address questions. It estimates patterns and differences that qualitative accounts do not quantify.
Educational measurement : The design and interpretation of procedures that quantify knowledge, skills, attitudes, or other educational attributes. Claims about learning depend on how learning is operationalized and measured.
Validity (statistics) : The degree to which evidence and reasoning support an interpretation or intended use of results. Educational measures and causal claims require different forms of validity evidence.
