Edward Thorndike

Edward Thorndike (1874–1949) was an American psychologist whose studies of animal learning established connectionism and the law of effect, shaping experimental psychology and education.

Law of effect: A principle that responses followed by satisfying consequences become more likely, while responses followed by discomfort become less likely. Thorndike formulated this principle from his animal-learning experiments.
Thorndike's puzzle-box experiments: A series of experiments in which cats learned to escape from boxes by operating simple mechanisms. These studies supplied Thorndike’s central evidence for gradual, trial-and-error learning.
William James: An American philosopher and psychologist whose work helped establish psychology in the United States. Thorndike studied with James at Harvard, where his animal research began.
Educational psychology: The study of how people learn and how teaching, assessment, and educational settings affect learning. Thorndike helped establish it as an empirical discipline grounded in measurement.
