Edward William Lane

Edward William Lane (1801–1876) was an English Orientalist, Arabic lexicographer, and translator whose major works include an Arabic-English dictionary and a translation of The Thousand and One Nights.

Arabic language: A Semitic language with a long literary history, spoken across the Middle East and North Africa. Lane learned Arabic to a high level and used it throughout his scholarly career.
Arabic-English Lexicon: Edward William Lane’s extensive dictionary of classical Arabic, published in parts from 1863 to 1893. This unfinished posthumous work is Lane’s best-known scholarly achievement.
Stanley Lane-Poole: An English Orientalist and archaeologist, Lane’s great-nephew and biographer. Lane-Poole published a biography that documents Lane’s life and work.
Victorian translation: Translation practices in Britain during the Victorian era, shaped by contemporary literary conventions and social norms. Lane’s editions reflect the period’s conventions for presenting foreign literature.

Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians: Lane’s 1836 ethnographic account of everyday life and customs in nineteenth-century Egypt. His extended residence in Cairo informed this influential description of Egyptian society.
