Edward Witten

Edward Witten is an American theoretical physicist and mathematician whose work connected quantum field theory and string theory with modern geometry and topology.

M-theory: A proposed framework unifying the five consistent superstring theories and eleven-dimensional supergravity. Witten argued that the five string theories are limits of a deeper eleven-dimensional theory.
Supersymmetry: A proposed symmetry relating bosons and fermions by transformations that exchange the two. Supersymmetry underlies many of Witten’s arguments in quantum field theory and string theory.
Princeton University: A private research university in Princeton, New Jersey. Witten earned his doctorate in physics there under David Gross.
String theory: A theoretical framework in which fundamental particles arise as excitations of one-dimensional strings. Witten became one of its most influential advocates and developers.

Witten index: A supersymmetric index counting bosonic minus fermionic ground states, stable under suitable deformations. Witten introduced it to extract robust information about supersymmetric quantum systems.
David Gross: An American theoretical physicist known for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in quantum chromodynamics. Gross supervised Witten’s doctoral research at Princeton.
Loop quantum gravity: A research program that quantizes spacetime geometry without relying on string theory’s extra dimensions. It offers a distinct approach to quantum gravity from the string-theoretic program Witten helped shape.
Chern–Simons theory: A three-dimensional topological quantum field theory built from a gauge connection and its curvature. Witten showed how this theory yields knot invariants and relates to conformal field theory.
Topological quantum field theory: A quantum field theory whose observables depend on topology rather than local geometric details. Witten established influential connections between topological field theories and knot invariants.
