Effective field theory

An effective field theory describes phenomena at a chosen energy scale using relevant fields and interactions, while representing unresolved high-energy physics through approximations and parameters.

Renormalization group: A framework for describing how a theory’s parameters change as the scale of observation changes. It explains how effective descriptions evolve when the energy scale is lowered.
Lagrangian mechanics: A formulation of dynamics based on a function whose variations determine equations of motion. Effective field theories commonly specify dynamics through a Lagrangian density.
Fermi theory of beta decay: A low-energy theory describing beta decay through a point-like interaction among four fermions. It is an early example of a successful theory later understood as an approximation to a higher-energy one.
Fundamental theory: A theory intended to describe physical phenomena without relying on a more basic underlying description. Unlike an effective theory, it aims to remain valid beyond a limited energy regime.
Enrico Fermi: An Italian physicist who developed the first theory of beta decay and made major contributions to nuclear and particle physics. His beta-decay theory exemplified a useful low-energy description before the weak force was understood.
Power counting: A method for ranking terms in an expansion by their expected size. It estimates which operators matter most at a given energy.
Quantum field theory: A framework combining quantum mechanics and special relativity in which fields and their excitations describe physical systems. Effective field theory is a scale-limited way to use quantum field theory.
Chiral perturbation theory: An effective field theory describing low-energy interactions of pions and other light hadrons using chiral symmetry. It applies effective-field methods to the low-energy consequences of quantum chromodynamics.
Standard Model: The quantum field theory describing known elementary particles and three of their fundamental interactions. It is often treated as an effective theory that may give way to a deeper description at higher energies.
Kenneth G. Wilson: An American theoretical physicist whose renormalization-group work clarified how physical theories depend on scale. His framework gave effective theories a systematic account of scale and universality.
