Egerton Ryerson

Egerton Ryerson (1803–1882) was a Canadian Methodist minister and educator who shaped Ontario’s public school system and founded the institution that became Toronto Metropolitan University.

Ontario school system: The publicly funded network of elementary and secondary schools governed by Ontario’s provincial education system. Ryerson’s reports and leadership helped lay the institutional foundations of this system.
Chief Superintendent of Education for Upper Canada: The senior government office responsible for overseeing education in Upper Canada during Ryerson’s tenure. Ryerson used this office, held from 1844, to implement a province-wide school system.
