Egon Wellesz

Egon Wellesz (1885–1974) was an Austrian-born composer and musicologist who pioneered the study of Byzantine music and wrote operas, ballets, and symphonies.

Arnold Schoenberg: An Austrian composer who developed atonality and the twelve-tone method. Wellesz studied with Schoenberg and absorbed the Second Viennese School’s modernist outlook.
Byzantine chant: The liturgical vocal music of the Eastern Orthodox Church’s Byzantine tradition. It is the repertory Wellesz studied and helped make accessible to modern scholarship.
The Incarnatus Est: A choral work by Wellesz composed in 1927. It offers a compact example of his compositional response to sacred musical traditions.
