Egyptian chronology

Egyptian chronology is the reconstruction of dates and sequence for ancient Egypt’s periods, dynasties, and rulers, using texts, archaeological evidence, and scientific dating.

Ancient Egyptian history: The history of the civilization centered on the Nile Valley from prehistory through the Roman conquest. Chronology organizes this history into periods and dynasties.
Radiocarbon dating: A method for estimating the age of once-living material from its remaining carbon-14. It supplies independent date ranges for organic remains from Egyptian sites.
Manetho: A third-century BCE Egyptian priest and historian whose history of Egypt survives largely through later authors. His dynastic scheme remains a foundation of conventional Egyptian periodization.
New Kingdom chronology: The proposed dating and sequence of Egypt’s Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Dynasties. Debates over astronomical observations and reign lengths affect its absolute dates.
Pharaoh: A ruler of ancient Egypt, understood as both a political sovereign and a religious figure. Regnal sequences and reign lengths anchor many chronological reconstructions.
Dendrochronology: The dating of wood by matching patterns of annual growth rings. Egyptian timber can sometimes connect archaeological contexts to independently dated ring sequences.
Turin King List: A fragmentary New Kingdom papyrus listing Egyptian rulers and reign lengths. Its detailed sequence offers evidence for reigns missing from monumental lists.
Second Intermediate Period: A period of political fragmentation between Egypt’s Middle and New Kingdoms, conventionally spanning the Thirteenth through Seventeenth Dynasties. Its overlapping rulers and limited records complicate its duration and sequence.
Egyptian dynasty: A conventional grouping of ancient Egyptian rulers, usually linked by succession, family, or political circumstances. Dynasties are the principal units used to arrange Egypt’s rulers.
Sothic cycle: The roughly 1,460-year cycle in which the Egyptian civil calendar returns to alignment with the heliacal rising of Sirius. References to Sirius can constrain dates when their observational context is known.
