Egyptian governorates

Egyptian governorates are the country’s principal administrative divisions, each headed by a governor appointed by the president.

Governor of Egypt: A senior executive appointed to lead one of Egypt’s governorates. The governor is the chief official of each governorate.
Cairo Governorate: An Egyptian governorate containing the national capital, Cairo. It illustrates a densely urban governorate with no rural markaz subdivisions.
Egyptian revolution of 1952: A military-led overthrow of Egypt’s monarchy that established a republic. The republic reshaped state institutions and the governance of local territories.
Egyptian governorates by population: A ranking of Egypt’s governorates according to their resident populations. Population rankings reveal how unevenly people are distributed among governorates.
Markaz: A district-level administrative unit used in Egypt’s rural areas. Markazes subdivide many governorates, especially outside major cities.

Egyptian monarchy: The hereditary monarchy that ruled Egypt from 1922 until the 1952 revolution. The governorate system developed through both monarchical and republican periods.

Qism: An urban administrative district in Egypt, commonly translated as a police district or section. Qisms provide a common subdivision within urban governorates and cities.
