Egyptian–Hittite peace treaty

A treaty concluded around 1259 BCE between Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II and Hittite king Hattusili III, ending hostilities and establishing relations between their empires.

Ramesses II: An Egyptian pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty who ruled from about 1279 to 1213 BCE. He represented Egypt in the treaty and promoted it as a royal achievement.
Treaty: A formal agreement between political parties that establishes obligations, rights, or rules. This agreement is an early surviving example of a treaty between major states.
Hittite bronze tablet: A bronze copy of the Egyptian–Hittite treaty discovered at Hattusa in 1906. It is the principal surviving Hittite-language witness to the agreement.
Ramesses II’s peace with Hattusili III: The diplomatic settlement that ended Egyptian–Hittite hostilities and established a formal alliance. It describes the political relationship created by the treaty’s clauses.
Hattusili III: A Hittite king who ruled from about 1267 to 1237 BCE and negotiated peace with Ramesses II. His diplomacy secured a settlement after years of conflict with Egypt.
Non-aggression pact: An agreement in which parties pledge not to attack one another. The treaty’s central commitment was to end hostilities and prevent renewed war.
Kadesh Treaty tablet: A clay tablet bearing a Hittite-language version of the treaty found among the ruins of Hattusa. Its text preserves the Hittite account of the treaty’s terms.
Egyptian–Hittite relations: The political and diplomatic interactions between Egypt and the Hittite Empire during the Late Bronze Age. The treaty marked a shift from prolonged rivalry to cooperation between the empires.
Battle of Kadesh: A major battle fought between the Egyptian and Hittite empires around 1274 BCE near Kadesh in Syria. Its inconclusive outcome formed the backdrop to the later treaty.
Mutual defense pact: An agreement in which parties promise assistance if one is attacked by an outside power. Its clauses required support if either ruler faced aggression from a third party.
