Egyptian pyramids

Monumental structures built in ancient Egypt, primarily as royal tombs. Their forms and construction changed over time, from stepped designs to smooth-sided pyramids.

Pyramid construction: The methods used to quarry, transport, and assemble materials into pyramid structures. Labor organization and stone handling shaped how Egyptian pyramids were built.
Djoser: An Egyptian king of the Third Dynasty whose reign saw the construction of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. His funerary monument marks the first monumental stone pyramid complex.
Sneferu: An Egyptian king of the Fourth Dynasty associated with major pyramid-building projects at Meidum and Dahshur. His reign saw repeated experiments that led to successful smooth-sided pyramids.
Giza pyramid complex: The Old Kingdom funerary site containing the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. It is the best-known concentration of Egyptian royal pyramids.
Old Kingdom of Egypt: A period of ancient Egyptian history, approximately 2686–2181 BCE, noted for centralized rule and monumental building. The largest concentration of pyramid construction belongs to this era.
Pyramidion: The small capstone placed at the apex of an Egyptian pyramid. Its position completed the pyramid’s form and could carry solar or royal symbolism.
Imhotep: An Egyptian official and architect traditionally credited with designing Djoser’s Step Pyramid. His design transformed stacked mastabas into a monumental stepped form.
Khufu: An Egyptian king of the Fourth Dynasty for whom the Great Pyramid at Giza was built. His monument became the largest pyramid in Egypt.
Great Pyramid of Giza: The pyramid built for Khufu at Giza, the largest ancient Egyptian pyramid. Its scale and surviving interior passages make it the defining pyramid example.
Ancient Egyptian religion: The religious beliefs and practices of ancient Egypt, including worship of many gods and beliefs about the afterlife. Royal pyramids were built within a religious system centered on the king’s continued existence after death.
